In Week 5, Atwell Kindergarten invited family members to come to school to participate in our Gingerbread Man S.T.E.M. Challenge. The challenge consisted of devising, creating and testing a way for The Gingerbread Man to cross the river so he could escape the sly, hungry fox. The ideas and effort put in by both the adults and children, were truly amazing – the photos speak for themselves. And to finish off a wonderful afternoon, freshly baked gingerbread biscuits were eaten by all under the shady Atwell Tree. A big thank you to everyone who attended. The children (and teachers) had a wonderful time.
On Wednesday of Week 10, the annual Atwell Kindy Sports Day proved once again to be a popular event. The day began with the children marching out in teams to be greeted enthusiastically by the spectating families. The Kindy children participated in The Bear Hunt Obstacle Course, The Humpty Dumpty Egg and Spoon Relay, The Kindy Cup Horse Race and the Gingerbread Man Running Races. The Kindy parents also got into the spirit of the day by running in the energetic and very competitive Roll Out the Barrel Relays.
Our colourful Deputy, Mr Jones once again did an excellent job announcing the events and Miss Zappa kept things running smoothly with her very efficient ‘starting’ skills. Shayne, our school chaplain helped out with tricky situations on the track and the very capable Year 6 Faction Captains found their inner Kindy child. It was a fantastic day enjoyed by all who attended and luckily enough the rain held off right up until the end!
During the first three weeks of Term 3, the Kindergarten children were visited by the Association for the Welfare of Children in Hospital. The aim of this incursion was to familiarise the students with hospital procedures and equipment in an interactive and hands on manner. The children listened to each other’s heartbeats with stethoscopes, bandaged the broken legs, completed puzzles, played games and built a foam skeleton. We now have many budding doctors and nurses in the Kindy area!
On two beautiful Autumn days at the end of May, Atwell Kindergarten children and families participated in a Teddy Bears’ Picnic event. The days consisted of the children and teachers coming dressed in their pyjamas and bringing along their favourite teddy to join in the adventures.
The children made toast and Milo, created teddy bear headbands and read stories to their teddy bears. Dancing with teddy was a favourite activity. In the afternoon, each child invited a family member to join in the festivities which included sharing picnic snacks, the Teddy Bear Adventure obstacle course, teddy bear drawing, dancing to bear music, solving jigsaw puzzles and reading stories together in the bear cave.
Both events were well-attended by our families and a fun time was had by all. The Atwell Kindy Team would like to thank the family members who attended, (especially the brave souls who wore their PJ’s) and helped us make this a special time for the children.
